Returning home and recovering after a disaster in India
Before Re-Entering Your Home
- Wait for authorities to declare area safe
- Check exterior for structural damage
- Check for gas leaks - do NOT use open flame to check
- Watch for snakes and scorpions
- Wear sturdy shoes and gloves
Inside Your Home
- Open windows to ventilate
- Do NOT switch on electricity until checked by qualified electrician
- Check for mold growth - wear N95 mask while cleaning
- Photograph all damage for insurance/government relief claims
- Dispose of food that contacted flood water
- Boil water or use purification tablets before drinking
Health Precautions
- Watch for waterborne diseases: cholera, typhoid, leptospirosis, hepatitis A
- Use ORS for any diarrhea symptoms
- Seek medical help for fever, skin infections, respiratory issues
- Ensure children receive any missed vaccinations
- Beware of mosquito-borne diseases - use repellent and nets

- Register with local administration for relief
- Apply for PM CARES Fund assistance (pmcares.gov.in)
- Apply for state CM Relief Fund
- Contact SDMA for state-level disaster relief
- File insurance claims promptly with damage photographs
